Rosa Parks Of Montgomary, Alabama, US
EDM number 752 in 2016-17, proposed by Martin Docherty on 30/11/2016.
Categorised under the topics of Human rights, North America and Racial discrimination.
That this House notes that on 1 December 1955 Rosa Parks took a seat and changed the world; recognises the courage of a young, black woman to challenge the white racist segregation of public transport and civic life in Montgomery, Alabama, US; thanks the NAACP who supported Rosa Parks after her arrest for taking a seat in a whites-only section of a public service bus; further recognises that Rosa Parks' case was filed in the US District Court, which ruled in her favour, declaring segregated seating on buses unconstitutional, a decision later upheld by the US Supreme Court; and further notes the importance of this case in setting in motion the turning point in the 20th century of the African American and world battle for civil rights, which is as necessary today as it was in 1955.
This motion has been signed by a total of 49 MPs.
