Marmoset Brain Research
EDM number 1663 in 2001-02, proposed by Norman Baker on 18/07/2002.
That this House notes the investigation by the British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection of marmoset brain research at the University of Cambridge and the concerns regarding the underestimation by the Home Office of the high degree of suffering likely to be experienced by the animals in categorising the licences as only moderate; and calls on the Government to set up an independent inquiry into the Cambridge research and the use of primates in experiments in the United Kingdom more generally; and introduce far greater transparency into the regulation of animal experiments, with particular reference to the cost benefit test and the severity of suffering likely to be involved.
