CONDUCT OF DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH OVER DENTISTS' PAY

That this House condemns the behaviour of the Secretary of State for Health over the payment of dentists in general practice; deeply regrets the arbitrary manner in which it was announced that dentists were overpaid and therefore had to have a substantial cut in fees paid from 1st April; believes that this decision and its manner of delivery makes a mockery of the pay review body system and of the Dental Rates Study Group which exists for such purposes; notes that the problems over payment arise because the Department of Health did not expect dentists to work so hard under their new contract; and further believes that that Department of Health's behaviour will lead to still greater difficulties in obtaining dental care on the National Health Service.
