Assistance To Coal Mining Areas

That this House condemns the Government's refusal to make firm financial arrangements so that eligible local authorities can make full and beneficial use of extra aid allocated under the RECHAR scheme for coalfield areas; is aware of the loss of over 150,000 jobs in the mining industry over the last six years and the considerable economic damage that has inflicted; notes that the assistance available would be at no cost to the Exchequer; and calls on the Government to pass on immediately in full to coalfield local authorities the over ú100 million of EC aid that has been made available under the RECHAR programme.
