Hinkley Point Costs

EDM number 199 in 2017-19, proposed by Paul Flynn on 17/07/2017.
Categorised under the topics of Electricity, Nuclear power and Public expenditure.

That this House notes that Électricité de France, which previously deceived the gullible Coalition Government to agree to pay the highest price ever for electricity at Hinkley Point and guaranteed that price for 35 years, now plans to increase the construction costs by 10 per cent after increasing the price of its retail electricity earlier this year by 18 per cent; further notes that the National Audit Office reported last month that the Government has committed electricity consumers and taxpayers to a high cost and risky Hinkley deal; recalls that no EPR reactor anywhere in the world has generated any electricity and that all such projects are billions of pounds over budget and up to eight years late; and believes that the Government should invest in reliable, increasing good value renewable sources of power, including tidal, that employ an energy source that is British, clean, non-polluting and eternal.
