Mp Staff Redundancy Payments
EDM number 17 in 2017-19, proposed by Ronnie Cowan on 21/06/2017.
Categorised under the topics of Employment and Members of Parliament.
That this House acknowledges the lack of financial support for hon. Members' staff members who have found themselves unemployed due to their hon. Member not being returned at the 2017 general election; notes that a number of hon. Members, first elected at the 2015 general election, did not retain their seats meaning that many of their staff will have worked less than two years, therefore will receive inadequate redundancy support from the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA); further notes the Fixed-term Parliaments Act 2011 was created to provide a five-year period between general elections, therefore providing stability and reassurance for hon. Members' staff that they would have employment for five years; and believes that IPSA must look at the financial assistance that is being provided to staff and ensure that they are properly supported no matter the parliamentary term length.
