That this House recognises the important research carried out at the Rheumatoid Arthritis Pathogenesis Centre of Excellence at the University of Glasgow, funded by Arthritis Research UK, where scientists are understand how and why rheumatoid arthritis starts, why the disease attacks the joints and why it doesn't stop, with an aim to personalise drug treatment by examining markers in individual patient joint tissue; understands that rheumatoid arthritis affects over 400,000 people in the UK and 37,000 in Scotland, and that together with other forms of musculoskeletal conditions are the single largest cause of workplace absence in the country; and notes that Arthritis Research UK supports over £17 million of research in Scotland into the causes, treatment and cure of rheumatoid arthritis and other musculoskeletal condition and believes that arthritis research should be a priority to improve patients' quality of life and reduce the impact on the UK economy.
