Pumped Storage
EDM number 331 in 2015-16, proposed by Callum McCaig on 16/07/2015.
Categorised under the topics of Energy and Utilities.
That this House welcomes the inclusion of two pumped storage projects, SSE's Coire Glas, up to 30 gigawatt hours storage potential, and Scottish Power's Cruachan II upgrade, up to 7.2 gigawatt hours additional storage potential, in the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity's draft Ten Year Network Development Plan for 2016; notes that their inclusion will allow for the projects to be considered by the European Commission for inclusion on the EU's Project for Common Interest list of projects of significant cross-border importance; further notes that there is currently no supportive long-term public policy and regulatory framework in the UK to enable final investment decisions for large-scale storage projects to be taken; and calls on the Government to recognise the benefits that hydro pumped storage could provide to the British electricity system, by providing an investment framework that could allow Coire Glas to become the first hydro pumped storage project to be built in over 30 years in the UK which, alongside an upgrade to Cruachan, would more than double the large-scale energy storage capacity currently available on the system.
