Railfreight Interchanges
EDM number 602 in 2008-09, proposed by John Leech on 27/01/2009.
Categorised under the topic of Railways.
That this House acknowledges the contribution of railfreight interchanges to the UK economy and the national infrastructure network; recognises that, by removing lorry journeys from the roads, railfreight interchanges reduce carbon emissions, road congestion and the deterioration of motorways; notes that the Planning Act 2008 designates railfreight interchanges as projects of national importance; acknowledges the problem of obtaining access to finance in the present economic climate notably for those developers proposing interchanges; and observes that diminished investment in new interchanges will have harmful consequences on trade, the UK economy and the climate.
