National Road Safety Week
EDM number 3 in 2007-08, proposed by Bob Russell on 06/11/2007.
Categorised under the topics of Cycling and Roads.
That this House supports National Road Safety Week, 5th to 11th November, co-ordinated by Brake, the road safety charity; is appalled that 2,608 children were killed or seriously injured last year while walking or cycling in the UK - seven children every day; is concerned that road safety education is not part of the National Curriculum; notes the Health Development Agency estimates that 20 mph limits on residential roads would reduce child death and injury by 67 per cent., saving 13,000 children from death or injury on the roads each year; and urges the Government to ensure that every school teaches road safety and every local authority protects its children with 20 mph zones around schools and homes.
