Public Attitudes To Animal-Human Hybrids

EDM number 1305A2 in 2007-08, proposed by Evan Harris on 03/04/2008.
Categorised under the topics of Medical ethics and Genetics.

leave out from `welcomes' to end and add `the fact that the public support the use of animal human hybrid embryos for medical research as demonstrated by the poll conducted by the HFEA during the public consultation exercise in 2007; notes that, unsurprisingly, those opinion polls, like the recent Comres poll for the Christian institute or the survey by Opinion Research Business for the Catholic Church, which only ask whether hybrid embryos should be created but without mentioning medical research or potential advances in knowledge about diseases tend to show a majority opposed; further notes that support for the use of embryos for medical research or therapy but not otherwise is a reflection of the UK consensus view since the Warnock report that embryos have a special status, and their creation and use requires medical justification; and welcomes the fact that this requirement is a key part of the existing 1990 HFE Act and of the current HFE Bill.'.

This is a ammendment to 1305.
