Public Attitudes To Animal-Human Hybrids
EDM number 1305 in 2007-08, proposed by David Taylor on 01/04/2008.
Categorised under the topics of Medical ethics and Genetics.
That this House welcomes the recent Comres poll, conducted from 26th to 28th March 2008, which found that 60 per cent. of people are opposed to the creation of animal-human embryos with only 33 per cent. approving; notes that these results confirm the Government's own consultation, the 2005 Review, which showed that of the 311 responses that addressed hybrids only 54 approved; further notes that only 160 out of 810 submissions to the 2007 Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority consultation on hybrids endorsed cytoplasmic hybrids and that only 114 out of 810 submissions endorsed full hybrids; and considers that this vindicates the comments of the Chief Medical Officer, Sir Liam Donaldson, that full hybrids are `a step too far as far as the public are concerned.'.
