WOMEN'S INSTITUTE STOP EXCESS PACKAGING CAMPAIGN
EDM number 733 in 2006-07, proposed by Timothy Farron on 25/01/2007.
That this House notes with concern the levels of excess packaging used by manufacturers and retailers and congratulates the Women's Institute's campaign to stop excess packaging, which creates around 100,000 tonnes of household waste per week and 5.3 million tonnes of waste per year; calls on supermarkets to reduce excess packaging wherever possible and use only compostable and recyclable materials in packaging; and urges supermarkets to restrict unnecessary food miles by purchasing local and regional goods, which further reduces the need for packaging.
