DIABETES UK'S STATE OF THE NATIONS REPORT
EDM number 715 in 2006-07, proposed by Adrian Sanders on 23/01/2007.
That this House welcomes the Diabetes UK (Diabetes: State of the Nations) report; notes with concern the findings on structured patient information that only half of adults, and a quarter of children and young people, living with diabetes are aware of any structured education courses to help them manage their condition; also notes with concern that information about the courses that are available is lacking; further notes that a majority of people newly diagnosed with diabetes do not receive structured education in their first year living with the condition; realises that to improve the health of the nation there is a need to improve patient knowledge and provide patient information to enable people with diabetes to be able to make decisions about their lifestyle, care and medication; realises that providing patients with information is a simple way to save lives, improve quality of life and reduce costs to the NHS; and calls on the Government to make best use of and recognise the third sector as leaders in terms of knowledge and expertise in providing relevant and tailored support, information and education to patients.
