Jamil El-Banna And British Residents In Guantanamo Bay
EDM number 482 in 2006-07, proposed by Sarah Teather on 12/12/2006.
That this House deplores the continued unlawful internment of Brent resident Jamil el-Banna and at least nine other British residents in Guantanamo Bay; notes that these men have been denied access to a free or fair trial and considers this to be in breach of every fundamental and internationally recognised legal principle; joins the European Parliament in condemning the Government's complicity in the kidnapping, detainment and extraordinary rendition of British residents and subsequent refusal to offer consular assistance; urges the Government to accept their responsibility and moral duty towards Jamil el-Banna whose wife resides in Brent and who has British born children; regrets that until detainees are either tried in a court of law or released the camp will continue to do significant damage to the United States wider foreign relations; believes that the Government should be stronger in its condemnation of the Guantanamo Bay detainment camp; and calls on the Government to intensify efforts to secure the camp's closure and the speedy and safe return of British residents such as Jamil el-Banna.
