Export Of Live Sheep And Calves
EDM number 712 in 2005-06, proposed by David Taylor on 10/10/2005.
That this House deplores the fact that the export of live sheep for slaughter abroad has resumed; notes that lengthy export journeys often impose great suffering on sheep as a result of severe overcrowding, heat stress, injuries and exhaustion; further notes that the European Union may soon lift the prohibition on the export of calves from the UK; believes that this could lead to the resumption of the export of calves for rearing as veal on the continent where they may be kept in veal crates or on concrete and slats without bedding material, both of which systems are illegal in the UK; and urges the Government to do all it can to encourage the sheep industry to end the export of live sheep for slaughter and to encourage the dairy industry not to restart the export of calves to continental veal units.
