Benefit To Peripheral Areas Of Olympic And Paralympic Games
EDM number 653 in 2005-06, proposed by Nick Harvey on 20/07/2005.
That this House congratulates Team London 2012 on the successful Olympic bid; notes the benefits for British people in the run up to the London Olympics in the form of sports facilities and provisions for sports training; believes that potential benefits from new facilities for young people in those areas of the UK set to host Olympic events are huge but is concerned that many areas of the UK which already lack adequate sporting facilities are excluded from the outline plans for the bid; and calls on the Government and Sport England to address the imbalance in sports funding which could worsen as some areas are developed for the Olympics whilst others, such as the South West Peninsula, lag behind untouched by the provisions for the games.
