CORNWALL'S BID TO BECOME EUROPEAN REGION OF CULTURE

EDM number 2377 in 2005-06, proposed by Andrew George on 15/06/2006.

That this House acknowledges the success of the European Capital of Culture programme; congratulates the city of Liverpool for its successful bid to be Capital of Culture in 2008; regrets however that, because the programme is based on an assumption that culture is necessarily an urban phenomena, there is little chance for predominantly rural regions such as Cornwall to succeed in gaining recognition for its own distinctive and rich culture, language and art; and calls on the Government to support the lobby to widen the scope of the European Culture programme by 2010 and to support Cornwall's bid to become the first European region of Culture.

This motion has been signed by a total of 24 MPs.
