First Female Votes In The United Kingdom
EDM number 2046 in 2005-06, proposed by Lorely Burt on 26/04/2006.
That this House celebrates the anniversary of the first general election in which women were enfranchised on the same basis as men on 30th May 1929; notes that there are currently 127 female hon. Members, which represents just under 20 per cent. of the House of Commons, which is still glaringly unequal; further notes that if current trends continue it would take 200 years or 40 general elections to achieve an equal number of women in the House; asks that all political parties do more to prevent sexual discrimination during the election process; and calls on the Government to ensure that remaining structural and institutional barriers to women's participation in politics are removed.
This motion has been signed by a total of 72 MPs.
