Tallow Disposal

EDM number 2042 in 2005-06, proposed by Roger Williams on 26/04/2006.

That this House recognises that tallow is a clean fuel that can be used as a biofuel component to reduce carbon emissions; notes that tallow has been used as a green fuel onsite at rendering facilities for many years; deplores the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs' (DEFRA) decision to designate tallow as a waste material subject to disposal under conditions compliant with the European Union Waste Incineration Directive (WID); acknowledges the additional costs imposed on UK farming and the meat industries by DEFRA's decision; further notes that 22 of the European Union member states are not treating tallow as subject to the WID and that consequently farmers across the UK have been put at a competitive disadvantage as a result of the Government's actions; calls for the Government to issue a derogation to the WID exempting the burning of tallow as a fuel from its remit; and further calls for the Government to postpone the enforcement of the WID in respect of tallow until the review of tallow burning currently being undertaken by the European Commission is completed.

This motion has been signed by a total of 39 MPs.
