British Residents In Guantanamo Bay
EDM number 1586 in 2005-06, proposed by Diane Abbott on 07/02/2006.
That this House applauds Amnesty International's latest efforts to highlight the plight of prisoners at Guantanamo Bay including nine British residents being held without trial at the detention centre; notes that approximately 500 people of around 35 different nationalities remain held in a legal black hole, many with no access to the courts, legal counsel or family visits; is appalled at the British Government's failure to act on behalf of these long-term residents of the UK who have now been held for more than four years; believes that Guantanamo Bay has become a symbol of injustice and abuse in the US Administration's `war on terror'; and calls on the Government to demand that these prisoners be released or charged and that the detention centre be closed.
