Sachs Report

EDM number 943 in 2004-05, proposed by Parmjit Singh Gill on 16/03/2005.

That this House welcomes Dr Jeffrey Sachs' Millennium Project Report published on 17th January; notes that the release of the report, `Investing in Development: A Practical Plan to Achieve the Millennium Development Goals', is the first event in a series of global initiatives and events focusing on progress against the UN Millennium Development Goals set out in 2000 to halve global poverty and hunger, to protect the environment, improve health and sanitation and tackle illiteracy and discrimination against women, to be achieved by 2015; urges the international community to raise its level of aid to the UN target of 0.7 per cent. of GDP to help in this effort; and further urges the international community to heed the advice of Dr Sachs in outlining `Every month, 150,000 children in Africa, if not more, are dying from the silent tsunami of malaria, a largely preventable and utterly treatable disease'.

This motion has been signed by a total of 38 MPs.
