Promoting Fairtrade

EDM number 812 in 2004-05, proposed by Tom Brake on 01/03/2005.

That this House, on the first day of Fairtrade Fortnight, congratulates Cambridge City, Cardiff, Derby, Leeds, Liverpool City, Kingston, Milton Keynes Borough, Newcastle Upon Tyne City, Norwich, Pendle, Portsmouth City, Somerset County, Stockport Metropolitan Borough, Swansea and York councils and many other local authorities on their Fairtrade status; looks forward to Sutton Council gaining Fairtrade status; notes the very considerable benefits that producers in developing countries derive from Fairtrade products; recognises the work of the UK Local Government Alliance for International Development in promoting Fairtrade and other international development issues within local authorities; and notes the Department for International Development's Development Awareness Fund, which local authorities may find of assistance in achieving Fairtrade status.
