Illegal Meat Imports

EDM number 73 in 2004-05, proposed by James Paice on 23/11/2004.

That this House deplores the Government's inaction on tackling illegal meat imports; notes that illegal meat imports present serious risks to both animal and human health and threaten the survival of many species in the wild; believes that posters, leaflets and four extra sniffer dogs at UK entry points falls well short of the action required to protect human and animal health; and calls on the Government immediately to commence trials of equipment to x-ray all passenger baggage at the point of departure and transmit those pictures to UK Customs while the aircraft is in flight in order to prevent illegal meat entering the UK.
