Enlargement Of The Eu And Treatment Of Migrant Workers
EDM number 540 in 2004-05, proposed by Keith Vaz on 18/01/2005.
That this House notes with great concern the special report by Felicity Lawrence in The Guardian on the 10th and 11th January, describing the horrendous conditions that some of the migrant workers coming to Britain live under; urges that an inquiry be held into the workings and recruiting methods of the agencies responsible for recruiting migrant workers from Eastern Europe and overseas; calls on supermarkets such as Sainsbury's to take greater responsibility for their supplier staff in terms of their living conditions and well-being and the adherence to minimum wage legislation; and urges the Home Office to reconsider the fee of ú50 to register with the work placement scheme, as it appears to be a disincentive for migrant workers actually to register.
