Mr Marwan Barghouti
EDM number 244 in 2004-05, proposed by Jeremy Corbyn on 30/11/2004.
That this House notes the current absence of many significant individuals with political potential to the forthcoming Palestinian elections who currently reside in Israeli prisons, including Marwan Barghouti, who has been imprisoned now for two and a half years without access to his wife and solicitors, and in isolation; notes that Marwan is the elected representative of the Palestinian Legislative council and an ambassador for peace, having taken part in the Oslo negotiations and campaigned tirelessly for the implementation of the peace process; notes the continual support for his case provided by the Inter-Parliamentary Union to date; calls upon the Government to ensure that the British Ambassador in Israel visits him in prison and that a parliamentary delegation from the UK is able to visit him in prison as a fellow parliamentarian; and calls upon the Israeli Government to review his case, and many others, as a matter of the utmost urgency, with a view to ensuring that they are able to take part in the fair and free, democratic elections planned for January.
