Hazardous Waste
EDM number 19 in 2004-05, proposed by Tim Yeo on 23/11/2004.
That this House notes that the Government has known since 1999 that from 16th July co-disposal of hazardous waste and non-hazardous waste would no longer be permitted at landfill sites; remains concerned that the Government failed to publish precise treatment standards for hazardous waste required from July which the industry needed in order to meet the requirements; regrets the insufficient treatment capacity as a result of the fall in the number of eligible disposal sites; is disturbed by the impact on small and medium-sized enterprises around the country, the rise in environmental crime which continues to result from the lack of facilities, and the increase in the transportation of hazardous waste which causes even more environmental degradation; and calls upon the Government to address the problem of hazardous waste as a matter of extreme urgency and to ensure that the Environment Agency allows sufficient resources to deal with both the lack of licensed facilities and the increase in industrial fly-tipping of hazardous waste substances.
