That this House notes that applicants for leave to remain as the spouse of a United Kingdom citizen have to surrender their travel documents and cannot take up employment for the duration of their application; deplores the gross delays at the Immigration and Nationality Department in dealing with such applications; and calls on the Secretary of State for Home Affairs to set a one-month deadline for dealing with routine spousal applications.
