Breast Cancer
EDM number 17 in 2003-04, proposed by Tim Yeo on 26/11/2003.
That this House welcomes the Breast Cancer Care, 80 over 50, report and campaign to raise awareness of breast cancer in the over 50s; notes the report's findings that although 8 per cent. of breast cancer cases in the United Kingdom are diagnosed in women over the age of 50, many older women are not aware that the risk of developing breast cancer increases significantly with age; is further concerned that, despite guidance issued by the National Institute of Clinical Excellence that the drug Herceptin should be made available to women with advanced breast cancer, research has revealed that up to two thirds of women who could benefit from the drug are not receiving it; notes that, in addition, there are substantial regional variations in the availability of Herceptin; and calls on the Government to ensure that those women with breast cancer receive the best possible care.
