Sustainable Waste

EDM number 837 in 2002-03, proposed by Alan Whitehead on 05/03/2003.

That this House recognises the enormous challenge of creating a sustainable waste management framework, with domestic waste doubling by 2024 on current trends; welcomes proposals to increase the landfill tax to ú35 over the medium to long term; urges the Government to bring forward these increases over a shorter time period; further welcomes the proposed reform of the landfill tax credit scheme and the attendant opportunity for investment in recycling reuse and waste diversion programmes; also welcomes the Government's decision to introduce transitional arrangements for schemes currently funded through LTCS: calls on the Government to provide urgent and significantly increased investment in waste minimisation and doorstep recycling projects and to adopt proposals for a waste incineration tax; and urges the Government to allow local authorities to pioneer innovative variable charging schemes.

This motion has been signed by a total of 58 MPs.
