Future Of Consignia/royal Mail

EDM number 820 in 2001-02, proposed by Lindsay Hoyle on 06/02/2002.

That this House expresses its alarm over the recent plans for full postal competition in the United Kingdom by 2006 as unveiled by Postcomm, the Postal Regulator last Thursday 31st January; notes that the proposals have far-reaching consequences for the unique door-to-door delivery service in the United Kingdom and for the provision of the universal service obligation as a whole; and urges the Government to use its influence to ensure an extension of the six weeks' consultation period allowed by Postcomm for comments on its plan, as this is a matter of national concern with significant repercussions for customer services particularly in rural areas which should not be decided upon in the space of a few short weeks.

This motion has been signed by a total of 114 MPs.
