Equitable Life
EDM number 1053 in 2001-02, proposed by Christopher Chope on 21/03/2002.
That this House notes that the Treasury Committee took evidence on 30th October 2001 and 13 November 2001 in relation to the regulation of Equitable Life; is concerned that the Government no longer expects Lord Penrose to report in 2002; regrets that the Treasury Committee has no plans to take further evidence or investigate the conduct of the Treasury as regulator of Equitable Life; calls upon the Committee to resume forthwith its Inquiry and, in particular, to investigate the reasons underlying the length of time needed for the Penrose Inquiry, including delays resulting from the non availability of documents covering the period when the Treasury was the regulator; congratulates the Parliamentary Ombudsman on the progress being made in his investigation of alleged maladministration by the regulator during 1999 and 2000; and calls upon him now to extend his investigation to the period prior to 1999 to ensure speedier justice for Equitable Life policy holders.
