Aluminium Can Recycling

EDM number 645 in 1997-98, proposed by Helen Southworth on 14/01/1998.

That this House congratulates the Aluminium Can Recycling Association for their effective action to promote environmentally friendly recycling of used aluminium drinks cans in the United Kingdom which, since ACRA was formed, has resulted in the aluminium can recycling rate rising from 2 per cent. in 1989 to 31 per cent. at the end of 1996, 1.5 billion aluminium cans representing double the minimum target required by the EC directive on packaging and packaging waste, making aluminium cans the most recycled post-consumer package in the United Kingdom; welcomes the contribution to sustainable manufacturing made by the recycling of millions of aluminium drinks cans every day at the ALCAN high-tec dedicated recycling plant in Warrington; and encourages people to make recycling a habit so that the environment is protected, industry is competitive and communities benefit from the nearly ú40 million cash for cans which will be available to charities, fundraisers, community groups and individuals if every aluminium can used in 1998 is recycled.
