Marking The Millennium

EDM number 177 in 1997-98, proposed by Diana Organ on 26/06/1997.

That this House is pleased to note that the celebrations and events to mark the new Millennium will benefit the whole country; further notes that over ú1 billion of lottery money has been committed to over 100 projects on over 2,000 sites across the country and that by 31st December 2000, the Millennium Commission expects to have received at least ú1.6 billion for its work; welcomes each of the three components of the Millennium celebration, namely, the Capital Projects, on which ú994 million will be spent on 12 landmark projects in the nine English regions and in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, as well as on smaller, more local projects, the Millennium Awards, for which over ú200 million will be set aside to help tens of thousands of talented people fulfil personal goals which have a wider community benefit, including projects managed by the Prince's Trust, the Royal Society, Mind and CSV Scotland, and the Millennium Exhibition which will be a place of excitement and of education, opening up a 'window on the future', based at Greenwich and for which the Commission will provide up to ú400 million; congratulates the Government for helping to reinvigorate many of these projects and events; and greatly appreciates the work of the Millennium Commission and all those involved in planning and delivering them.
