British Tourist Authority
EDM number 196 in 1991-92, proposed by Alun Michael on 19/11/1991.
That this House notes the irritating tendency of the British Tourist Authority to forget that it is not the English Tourist Authority; notes that, despite previous complaints, correspondence is still directed to honourable Members on letterheads which bear the logo of both the British Tourist Authority and the English Tourist Board; believes that this tactlessness reflects the identity crisis of both bodies which is encouraged by the fact the Chairman of the Authority is also Chairman of the Board and appears unable to distinguish between the two roles; regrets that this confusion appears to be shared by some staff of the Authority and considers this less than surprising as some of them are apparently employed by both; regrets the disadvantage that results for the promotion of tourism to the rest of the United Kingdom and believes that the resultant resentment and divisiveness is against the interests of the English regions as well; and calls on the Government to take action to enable the Wales Tourist Board to market abroad in order to redress the failings of the Authority in its current form and ensure that tourism in Wales is promoted adequately in future.
