International Day Of The Midwife

That this House congratulates the International Confederation of Midwives on its organisation of the first International Day for the Midwife to be held on 7th May in order to promote the highly skilled work of midwives throughout the world; expresses its concern that over 500,000 women die each year during pregnancy or childbirth; supports the commitment of the International Confederation of Midwives to participate in initiatives to halve the level of maternal mortality by the year 2000; and congratulates the Royal College of Midwives for organising activities in communities around the United Kingdom to draw attention to the world levels of maternal mortality, and for organising practical support for midwives in Africa and Europe.
