Family Farms In Britain

EDM number 41 in 1990-91, proposed by Richard Livsey on 08/11/1990.

That this House calls on the British Government to put forward a national strategy for agriculture for the next 10 years and especially between the present time and 1992 to take account of the collapse of livestock market prices in Britain and the necessity for the European Community to conclude balanced agreements with Eastern European countries concerning imports of food into the community from that source; further calls on the Government to enact short-term financial support measures to medium and small family farms in Britain to see them through the current crisis in the industry; further takes note of the European Community's agreement on the package to reduce farm support by 30 per cent. in relation to the GATT round, and the British Government's advocacy of the measures; and realises that this will impose immense financial hardship on the family farms of Britain and will adversely affect the livestock sector.
