Armed Aggression In Lithuania
EDM number 286 in 1990-91, proposed by David Alton on 14/01/1991.
That this House unreservedly condemns the military repression of the democratically elected sovereign government of Lithuania and calls upon Mr Mikhail Gorbachev to halt the killing of innocent unarmed civilians; recalls that the three Baltic republics of Lithuania, Estonia and Latvia were occupied as a consequence of the infamous Nazi-Soviet pact of August 1939; that they are today pursuing their rightful claim to independence and democracy in a peaceful manner which this House should endorse; that as in Poland martial law and repression will do absolutely nothing to solve the socio-economic and ethnic crisis afflicting the entire Union of Soviet Socialist Republics; that the use of repression to hold the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics together will prevent the implementation of reform, bring about the end of perestroika and glasnost and tarnish Mr Gorbachev's image in the West; and, therefore, calls upon the European Community, NATO and Western governments to consider the following actions in response to the military repression in Lithuania: postponement of the Bush-Gorbachev summit, credit and non-humanitarian aid to be halted, Mr Gorbachev's receipt of the Nobel Peace Prize to be annulled and the Helsinki Review conference in Moscow to be cancelled.
