Loss Of The Antares

EDM number 115 in 1990-91, proposed by Ray Michie on 26/11/1990.

That this House deplores the tragic loss of the fishing vessel Antares; expresses its deepest sympathy to the families of the fishermen who have lost their lives and to the community of Carradale; believes that this disaster could and should have been avoided; deeply regrets that the relatives had to wait for the decision to be taken to raise the vessel, thereby adding to their suffering; further deplores the fact that the submarine was operating in busy fishing lanes and under the command of a trainee; and, while welcoming the fact that enquiries are taking place, urges that all submarine operations in recognised fishing areas should cease forthwith prior to the outcome of the official inquiries.
