Mineworkers' Pensions

EDM number 945 in 1989-90, proposed by Ieuan Wyn Jones on 03/05/1990.

That this House welcomes the recently announced surplus of ú942 million in the Mineworkers' Pension Scheme and the intention of British Coal to offer improved pay-outs; notes that despite the announcement, many retired miners will still face extreme hardship due to huge increases in electricity, gas and water bills in South Wales, as well as the evil poll tax which will have a particularly harmful effect on the South Wales Valleys; further notes that those miners who have retired from the coal industry prior to 1981 were often given redundancy payments to the tune of ú500; and believes that with the announcement of the surplus on its pension fund, British Coal has an opportunity to redeem itself by offering extra payments to those that were treated so shoddily when they retired from the industry prior to 1981.
