Natural Gas Supply To Northern Ireland
EDM number 883 in 1989-90, proposed by Roy Beggs on 23/04/1990.
That this House acknowledges that exclusion of Northern Ireland from the natural gas grid of Great Britain places an additional burden of ú5 to ú6 weekly in energy costs on families and is a significant disadvantage to domestic and industrial consumers; urges Her Majesty's Government and Members of the European Parliament to demand further consideration of the proposal to construct a gas pipeline from Morcambe Bay to Dundalk in the Irish Republic; supports the provision of a natural gas pipeline from Great Britain to Northern Ireland and thereafter an interconnector to supply natural gas to the Irish Republic from Northern Ireland; and reminds Her Majesty's Government that the gas industry in Northern Ireland was closed down five years ago because the Irish Government refused to negotiate a 'Fair Price' for supplying natural gas to Northern Ireland, and that a natural gas supply flowing from Northern Ireland to benefit economically citizens of the Irish Republic would be less vulnerable than a supply to Northern Ireland from the Irish Republic.
