Proposed Closure Of Langford Food Research Laboratory
EDM number 319 in 1989-90, proposed by Dawn Primarolo on 16/01/1990.
That this House congratulates the Institution of Professionals, Managers and Specialists for presenting the 40,000 signature petition to 10 Downing Street; believes that this is a clear expression of the public's concern at the closure of Langford at a time when consumers are becoming more aware and concerned at the quality and safety of food and therefore public health; notes that Langford has been in the forefront of research on listeria, botulism, cook-chill, chlorofluorocarbons in refrigeration and the safety of microwave ovens and that this research is of the immediate application for the benefit of everyone, which is unique; calls on the Government, in the light of its proposed legislation on Food Safety, immediately to reverse its decision to close Langford, thus saving the jobs of 120 scientists and acting in the best interests of the public as a whole, who have a right to know that the food that is available for their consumption is of the highest standard and is safe to eat.
