Dumping Of Cegb Fly Ash In The North Sea

That this House notes the direct action of Greenpeace which has drawn attention to the continued dumping of fly ash in the North Sea in contravention of Section XIV, Article 22a of the agreement signed at the International North Sea Conference in London in 1987 by the countries bordering the North Sea which agreed to phase out the dumping of industrial waste in the North Sea by 31st December 1989; regrets that the North East coast is the only place in Europe where fly ash is dumped at sea; notes that the fly ash dumped constitutes about 1.5 per cent. of all Central Electricity Generating Board fly ash and that this could be eliminated through a programme of energy conservation; further notes that the marine environment in the 40 square kilometres of the dump site is being destroyed; and calls on the Government immediately to withdraw the licence to the Central Electricity Generating Board and start abiding by international agreements to protect the environment as it has been asked to do by the Governments of West Germany, Holland, Norway and Sweden.
