Liberal Democrats And Toxic Waste In Matlock

EDM number 136 in 1989-90, proposed by Malcolm Bruce on 04/12/1989.

That this House notes with grave concern the policy of toxic waste proliferation implicit in the Labour-controlled Derbyshire County Council's decision to grant the transfer of the site licence at Lumshill Quarry, Matlock, from a local builder to Leigh Interests plc and its earlier decision to change the terms of the licence to allow the disposal of toxic waste without even consulting either Councillor Peggy Edwards, the Liberal Democrat County Councillor for the area, or the Liberal Democrat-controlled Matlock Town Council; further notes the potential threat to public health from pollution of local boreholes and the aquifer that supplies water to Nottingham and Derby, and to the pupils of Highfields Comprehensive School which is within 300 metres of the toxic waste site; and praises the pupils of Highfields for forming HATT, Highfields Against Toxic Tipping, and the local community for forming MAD, Matlock Against Dumping, and wishes both organisations every success with their campaigns which have been backed by the Matlock Town Council in a pluralist manner, which is in stark contrast to the approach of the Labour Party on the County Council.

This motion has been signed by a total of 10 MPs.
