Food Irradiation

EDM number 135 in 1989-90, proposed by Matthew Taylor on 04/12/1989.

That this House congratulates Egon Ronay and the Coalition Against Food Irradiation for drawing attention to the gigantic experiment with the population of Britain which Her Majesty's Government proposes to undertake as a result of the legislation of the sale of irradiated food; endorses their concerns that this legalisation would lead to laxity in the hygiene and safety measures now being applied to food production; notes that there is a lack of evidence for the need to irradiate food and that sections of scientific opinion believe there may be serious health risks to consumers from irradiated food; further notes the overwhelming opposition of the British public to the Government's proposals as evidenced in a recent opinion poll carried out for the Liberal Democrats which showed that 67 per cent. of all respondents opposed the Government's plans; and therefore calls upon Her Majesty's Government to put people first and abandon plans to allow the sale of irradiated food.
