Accidents Involving School Buses
EDM number 129 in 1989-90, proposed by Emma Nicholson on 01/12/1989.
That this House notes with great sadness the number of serious accidents involving children and school buses; is concerned that no statutory safety regulations exist for school transport systems; calls on the Government to take note of demands from parents and school governing bodies to introduce legislation setting a minimum standard of safety provision for school buses; and urges the Secretary of State for Transport to consider such measures as large visible signs and flashing lights attached to school buses, safe routes to school, seat belts for buses and coaches, adult supervision, first aid training for school bus drivers, school transport safety education and advice to children and the halting of all traffic when children are boarding or alighting a school bus, so that unnecessary traffic accidents are prevented in future.
