Rates Relief For Sports Clubs

EDM number 1270 in 1989-90, proposed by Menzies Campbell on 12/07/1990.

That this House congratulates the Liberal Democrat controlled South Somerset District Council, and Berwick-upon-Tweed Borough Council where the Liberal Democrats form the largest group, on receiving Central Council of Physical Recreation Sporting Accolade awards for granting 100 per cent. rates relief from the Government-imposed Uniform Business Rate to all voluntary sports clubs in their area; notes that adult members of sports clubs already pay the poll tax; praises sports clubs for the valuable contribution they make to the social life of local communities and the health of the nation; and calls on the Government to end their mean-mindedness and bear the full cost to local councils of granting 100 per cent. rates relief to local sports clubs from a system imposed and set from the centre which threatens their local community.

This motion has been signed by a total of 10 MPs.
