Rural Schools In Wales

EDM number 1260 in 1989-90, proposed by Alex Carlile on 10/07/1990.

That this House expresses its concern at the damage being done to primary and secondary rural schools in Mid-Wales since the introduction of Local Management in Schools; is deeply worried that gross underfunding, staff redundancies and general neglect consequent upon Local Management in Schools may lead to the closure of small rural schools and thereby cause a decline in the Welsh education system as a whole; calls upon the Secretary of State for Wales to give a clear commitment to the future of village schools as an important and integral part of Welsh life; further calls upon the Government to provide the necessary resources to maintain the fine tradition of education in rural Wales, including the provision of peripatetic music teaching; and urges the Government to review Local Management in Schools so as to ensure that proper recognition is given to the extra costs caused by sparsity of population and rurality.

This motion has been signed by a total of 13 MPs.
