Coal Dust Blight In Bootle

EDM number 1044 in 1989-90, proposed by Ronnie Fearn on 22/05/1990.

That this House notes with grave concern the health and environmental threat to the residents and school children of Bootle from choking coal dust blown off the large stockpiles of imported coal stored at Bootle docks in close proximity to residents in the Rimrose and Peel Road estates and the St. Joan of Arc School; calls on the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board to take immediate preventative measures which should include covering the coal with sheeting, continuous watering of the coal, putting up fencing to shield the coal from the wind, and ensuring the coal lorries are covered and washed before leaving the site; believes that the threat to public health from the coal dust is totally unacceptable; urges the local health authority to complete its investigation into this danger as soon as possible to enable its findings to be raised when the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board Bill is considered by the Commons; and further calls on Her Majesty's Government to join the Liberal Democrats in opposing this Bill unless the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board takes urgent action to clean up this blight, and starts putting the health and wellbeing of the people of Bootle first.
