Insurance Cover For People With Mental Ill Health
EDM number 836 in 2017-19, proposed by Norman Lamb on 22/01/2018.
Categorised under the topics of Equality, Financial services and Mental health.
That this House notes with concern evidence revealed by The Guardian newspaper of people with mental health problems being denied access to insurance, including life insurance; further notes that while some people who have suffered from mental health conditions are charged high premiums for insurance, others are refused cover altogether; believes that these are wholly inappropriate practices which amount to a serious discrimination against people with mental ill health; calls on the Equality and Human Rights Commission to instigate an investigation on this issue; further calls for the Financial Conduct Authority to investigate such policies; and calls on the Government, as a matter of urgency, to consider whether a change in the law, including potential reform of the Equality Act, is necessary to address this injustice and ensure that insurance policies do not unfairly discriminate against those who suffer or in the past have suffered from mental illness.
